Cub Scout Activities

Cub Scouting means "doing." Everything in Cub Scouting is designed to have the boys doing things. Activities are used to achieve the aims of Scouting-citizenship training, character development, and personal fitness. Many of the activities happen right in the den and pack. The most important are the den meetings and the monthly pack meetings.

Den Meetings

The Pack is divided into small groups of about eight boys called Dens under the direction of adult Den Leaders and, in some cases, Boy Scout Den Chiefs. The Den Leaders are trained parent volunteers. The Den allows boys to get to know each other better and engage in age-specific activities that would be difficult in a larger group. The Den also provides leadership opportunities for the boys as they elect "denners" to help to teach each other. Dens hold meetings two evenings a month at OLQP School. Dens also schedule monthly field trips or "Go-and-Sees" to local museums, sporting events, parks etc. Den activities are planned around a monthly theme and include games, handicrafts, demonstrations, hikes and other outdoor fun, practicing skits and songs in preparation for the next Pack meeting and taking part in simple ceremonies. Usually work on advancement requirements is included, but much of that work is accomplished by the boys with their parents (except for the Webelos rank). The Den Leaders may ask for special help occasionally from parents (helping with a meeting, sharing a special skill, or just providing a snack for the boys).

Pack Meetings

The Pack includes not only the boys in each den, but also their families, and their leaders. The Pack meets once a month (typically on the third Friday at OLQP school) with Cub Scouts, leaders, parents and other family members attending. The Pack meeting is the climax of the month's den meetings and activities. It gives the dens something to look forward to and work toward. This is a chance to recognize the boys, their parents, and their leaders. In addition to its regular meetings, the Pack sponsors certain special events. These include service projects (e.g. "Scouting for Food" food drive for the needy), outdoor activities (e.g. family campout), fund raising activities (e.g. Popcorn Sale), and participation in community events (e.g. Memorial Day parade). The Cubmaster is an adult volunteer who serves as master of ceremonies at all Pack meetings and leads Pack activities of all kinds. The Pack Committee is a group of adult volunteers who plan the Pack program and individual activities as well as managing such things as record keeping, finance, leadership recruitment, and registration. The Pack Committee meets the second Tuesday of each month at the OLQP annex and meetings are open to any interested parent.

Camping

Age-appropriate camping programs are packed with theme-oriented action that brings Tiger Cubs, Cub Scouts, and Webelos Scouts into the great out-of-doors. Cub Scout pack families enjoy camping in local council camps and other council-approved campsites. Camping programs combine fun and excitement with doing one's best, getting along with others, and developing an appreciation for ecology and the world of the outdoors.
